Sometimes I am lucky to wake up and make a commute, not to work but to the sea. And when I am driving, sometimes it’s sunny and sometimes there are actually waves at the beach when I arrive. More often than not however you are not so fortunate to have all these happenings come together. But when the world aligns there can be some pretty beautiful things that often go unseen. Here we have people making the commute t0 work while others make a commute to enjoy what the world has to offer for the day while a wave goes by unnoticed by most.

Cruising around the Indian Ocean in a luxurious yacht is an awesome experience, yet very sobering at times. On one hand you have a boat that can handle pretty much anything the ocean has to offer in terms of weather and swell. On the other hand when you pull up to islands to go surf and see locals paddling around in carved out wooden canoes you can’t help but to think if your boat is a little bit over the top. These people literally have nothing, and to make things more bizarre, Indonesians would rather take a Coca-Cola off your hands than clothing. Here in this photo we have a man heading back home from one island to the other which more often than not isn’t a walk in the park ,and they do it in wooden canoes.

My good friends over at Chemistry ran an ad in the April 2010 issue of TW Surf. In the ad they used my portrait of team rider Cheyne Magnusson. I am very stoked on the look of the ad. Cross Processed Desert Love

I got a bunch of film back from the lab the other day, and I was pretty psyched on some of the shots. The cross processed film from Anza Borrego is my favorite. I didn’t scan any of the B&W rolls but I got some epic line-ups of Swamis that I have been printing in the darkroom. Once I have nailed the prints I will scan and post them to this digital machine. I also got some portraits of my good friend Sam who resides in Utah, he is a very good snowboarder and good friend. Thanks for the hospitality while I was in Utah buddy! A new camera came in the mail as well, a Leica M3. I can’t wait to start shooting with this classic machine. Stay tuned for more grain…

Toy Camera Fun Winter 09/10

I usually look to the biggest and best gear when it comes to photography. Whether it be Canon’s digital line of products, Hasselblad’s medium format awesomeness, or a classic 35mm camera like a Leica. I love nice camera gear. However every now and then I come across a toy camera that you can guarantee will produce shitty pictures but for some reason I want to own it. This past winter my sister bought me a blackbird twin lens reflex camera. The photos aren’t the sharpest, but it was still fun to have this thing in my car at all times to shoot whatever came across my path. Here are some images from SD this past winter.

Hot Dog!

It seems as if every day has been melting into the next. This winter has been a multitude of colors covering the entire spectrum. As I look back on photos in my library I wouldn’t be able to tell you when they were shot. California has been very blessed this winter with waves for it seems like over a month now, and we have over two months left of winter! The rest of the week should be cranking before it is predicted to rain for a week straight which means lots of snow for the Sierras. I will be on the move over the next few days to capture as much imagery in the water as my body can possibly handle.

A Fresh Start

As 2009 has come to a close, I say hello and welcome to 2010. Already I have seen some amazing happenings around me. The wind has ceased to blow for about a week meaning it has been glassy all day. The ambient light this time of year is surreal, yesterday evening felt like a painting as I got out of the water. This winter has been 150 times better in terms of waves compared to last winter and we still have two solid months before spring time. I am looking forward to the days and weeks ahead of me and getting some memorable imagery. I hope all is well with everyone.
