A Long Way Gone

I have never been to the famed beach that is Malibu. Something about LA just gives me the creeps, but as luck would have it I got to assist Kassia Meador on a shoot for Roxy at Malibu a few weeks ago. I left my house at 5 am from Leucadia and made the two and a half hour treck to north LA. I arrived and was pleasantly introduced to David Troyer, a surf turned fashion photographer I have been following for quite some time now. He is a super rad guy who takes amazing shots in the water and it’s all with film. The day was spent shooting outfits for Roxy’s look book for this Fall. I even got to ride Kassies longboard during our lunch break and catch some ankle high peelers. I didn’t bring a wetsuit and the water was a toasty 58 degrees. We shot from 9 am to 7pm and I was shot out at the end of the day only to make the two and a half hour drive back home to San Diego. I want to thank Kassie for letting me assist as well as David for the epic day. Check out some photos I shot with my Hasselblad during the down time below.

Adaptation

Since I made a housing for my Hasselblad, I decided to outfit my Mark III Del Mar housing to fit my 35mm EOS 1n film body. It is one of the best decisions I ever made. Shooting film in the water makes you incredibly more patient to wait for the ‘moment,’ rather than firing off 10 fps with your digital body. I have been researching a ton of different films around the web and was curious to try Agfa Precisa. I am more than happy with the results and will definitely use this film in the future when shooting in the water. I shot in the early morning and late afternoon, but I have a feeling this film will look best in the middle of the day with really blown highlights. Can’t wait for more days where it’s glassy in the afternoon and everyone’s at work! ha

Lab Rats

So after about a month of construction, my secret project has come to a finish. It is a beautiful piece of machinery. Perfect timing too, because the weather just started to clear up and the sunsets were getting pretty good to go out and shoot some silhouettes. My first go, I had no idea what to expect. The housing didn’t leak which is the first step, the next is to get your exposure and focus right which I did ok minus a few drops of water on the port and an unnamed photo editor telling me my focus was completely off. The waves were pretty lackluster but it was pretty glassy, so my roommate Hugh and myself paddled out for about an hour to fire off a roll. Here is the best of what I got, not too shabby considering it was my first go. I want to thank my friend Tyler Reid for helping me out as well as Uncle Rico for teaching me how to bondo a housing.

I finally hooked my sketchy scanner up and brought these into the digital world. They have been sitting in a book on my coffee table for a while now. They were all shot in the Mentawais in June of 2010. Some of these are shot with Fuji’s instant film while others were shot with different Polaroid films I got on The Impossible Project.

ED! Yew! Rico and Tyler both work for Del Mar Housing Projects. Ed blows the leaves, and takes your recyclables. He also lives in this rad trailer behind DMHP. Most days you can find him getting some food down the road from the roach coaches.

Ever since I got home from Indo, the days have seemed to melt together into one gray existence. I can’t tell the difference between Monday and Friday, everyday seems to be exactly the same, not having a job probably also has some effect on this thought process. The only thing that was making time go by was counting down until America’s Independence day. This is one of my favorite holidays, the sun is out (usually), the weather is warm (usually), the beach is packed with people (usually), and people are lighting off illegal fireworks everywhere. Well this fourth of July was nothing like that. The weather was cold, it was overcast and the beach was empty for fourth of July standards. It was still a great day spent at the beach with friends, watching people almost blow their hands off and having a few cold beers. I shot the photos with my Hasselblad.

Pixel Hustle

I have been pretty hesitant to sit down and edit the 80 gb I shot in Indonesia. Especially after getting my rolls of 120 that in my opinion is the best stuff that I shot. I also don’t have deadlines to meet with all these images I am sitting on which is a good and bad thing. I will shoot over some of my favorites to a magazine here or there, but it is pretty damn difficult to actually get something ran when you aren’t shooting surf porn. Anyway I am pretty stoked on some of these and I hope you are too. It is interesting to compare the 120 images I shot and the digital images. Film has actual depth to the photo while pixels are so flat. It is what it is and it’s here to stay.
